The first commercial solar water heater was patented in 1891 by Clarence Kemp.
It consisted in putting metal-reservoir under sunlight in order to accumulate and keep the heat. Kemp developed his business and found a lot of customers in California. In some cities like Pasadena, in 1897, one third of the houses possessed this water heating devices.
