La primera patente fue registrada en 1759, pero fue Robert Stirling que dio su nombre a este tipo de motor en 1816, gracias a sus perfeccionamientos significativos. El motor funciona en cuatro fases sucesivas de compresio\u0301n (gracias a un pisto\u0301n), calentamiento, distensio\u0301n y enfriamiento. Adema\u0301s, comprende una fuente caliente y una fuente fri\u0301a.<\/p>\n<p>Un tal motor presenta algunas ventajas aseguradas: un motor de combustio\u0301n externa es menos contaminante, pero tambie\u0301n menos ruidoso, que un motor de combustio\u0301n interna. Por otra parte, su u\u0301nica fuente caliente puede ser alimentada con energi\u0301as renovables : la madera, el sol&#8230; Sin embargo, hasta el momento ha sido poco usado, a causa de su costo y, sobre todo, de su tiempo de calentamiento.
